Rolling Bearing Mountings for Converters
Trunnion bearing
Pig iron is turned into steel in converters. For this purpose the carbon content is reduced, unwanted impurities are removed, and the alloying constituents for the desired alloy are added.
The big vessels are supported by special bearings and housings.
Converter trunnion bearings are subjected to high loads and swiveled only by fractions of a revolution. Effective seals and a suitable lubricating system protect the rolling bearings from the dirt in their environment.
Converter trunnion bearings are designed for a high static load carrying capacity and reach service lives of more than 10 years.
Large bearings with outside diameters ranging from 620 to 1720 mm and matching housings are used.
Bull gear
The converter vessels are swung into the different positions through the pinion and bull gear system:
The bearings are designed for the rough operating conditions prevailing in the steel industry. Effective seals protect the rolling bearings from the large amounts of dirt in their environment.
The gear bearings for converters are designed for a high static load carrying capacity and reach service lives of more than 10 years.
Large bearings with outside diameters of more than 600 mm are used.
